Wilmoth comes up big in Crescent win

Hunter Wilmoth did a little bit of everything last week as Crescent picked up its fourth win of the season.

The junior scored on a long run play and then an even longer interception return Friday night to lift the Tigers to a 15-0 home win against Healdton.

The game was originally scheduled to be played at Healdton, but construction around the school’s football facility prompted the game to be moved to Crescent.

The non-district win lifted the Tigers to a 4-5 mark as they set to finish up their season this week at Christian Heritage.

The Tigers, 1-4 in District A-3 games, have been eliminated from playoff contention.

Wilmoth put Crescent on the board with a 78-yard touchdown run fi ve minutes into the game.

However, that was the last time the Tigers’ offense found the end zone.

“It really shouldn’t have been as close as it was,” said Crescent coach J.L. Fisher. “We had three touchdowns called back by penalties that we felt were questionable.”

Crescent attempted just seven passes and instead relied on the ground game.

Wilmoth was called upon for a bulk of that work as he got 18 carries and turned them into 173 yards.

The Tigers’ defense gave up 158 yards on 40 Healdton rush attempts and didn’t allow a completion in nine passes.

But it wasn’t until 3:31 remained in the third quarter that Crescent was able to get some breathing room.

With Healdton getting one of its deepest penetrations of the night, Wilmoth ended it with an interception and 90-yard return to the end zone.

Crescent’s defense was led by Gage Tontz, who had 11 tackles.
