KHS cheer dealt setback prior to Class 4A regional

Bad luck bit the Kingfisher High School cheerleading team before it even got a chance to participate in last weekend’s regional competition.

A severe sickness took out one of the team’s point flyers the week before the regional which was held last Saturday at Chickasha High School.

“We had to pull in an alternate who hadn’t cheered in over a year,” said Sarah Keeth, Kingfisher’s first-year cheerleading coach.

The setback proved too much to overcome.

KHS received a total score of 220 after its routine in the 4A competition and fell five points shy of the 225 necessary to advance to this weekend’s state competition.

“We missed state by a micro amount and I’m so proud of the girls’ hard work,” Keeth said. “The team came together and worked as hard as they could and hit 16 stunts. Our downfall was some tumbling skills touching.”Crossings Christian won the regional with 287 points.

Weatherford was the runner-up with 287. Bethany (261), Tuttle (257), Community Christian (248), Plainview (244) and Christian Heritage (244) were also able to advance.

Keeth said the team will return to practice soon for more competition down the road.“We’re so excited to work on these micro things to come back better than ever for Gameday state Nov. 2,” she said.

In the Class 2A regional, also at Chickasha, Crescent scored just enough to advance to state.

The Lady Tigers’ squad scored 225 points.

Cashion, however, just missed out on advancing with 215 points.
