Crescent upset bid denied

For more than half the game last Friday night, it appeared an upset was brewing between Crescent and Morrison.

The Tigers - in their home opener - had Class A’s eighth-ranked Wildcats’ offense stymied and even held a 10-point lead.

But Morrison, still reeling from the loss of starting quarterback Gage Williams to a knee injury in last week’s season opener, settled in to eventually pull away for a 24-10 victory.

The loss dropped Crescent to 1-1 while Morrison improved to 2-0.

Sophomore Jared Harmon got the start in Williams’ absence and Crescent was able to shut him down much of the first half.

After a scoreless first quarter, the Tigers scored first on a safety as Morrison attempted to punt at 7:30 of the second quarter.

Crescent got the ball back and extended the lead when Hunter Wilmoth scored a on 2-yard run. His pass to Reid Hopson was good for two points and a 10-0 Tiger lead.

Morrison was finally able to get something going offensively as Calan Veit found the end zone on a 4-yard run 2:07 before the half.

The Wildcats grabbed their first lead midway through the third quarter when Harmon hit Trevor Hughes for a 53-yard touchdown.

The lead stuck as Crescent’s offense was kept out of the end zone for the remainder of the night. Meantime, Harmon and Hughes scored on touchdown runs in the fourth quarter.

Morrison eventually amassed 334 yards of balanced offense.

Harmon threw for 164 and the Wildcats ran for 170 on 38 attempts.

Crescent only managed 73 yards on 27 carries.

While Wilmoth threw for 130, he was limited to eight completions on 22 attempts and was picked off twice. Trent Fisher was the top receiver with three catches for 57 yards.

Dominic Descher managed 52 yards rushing on 14 carries for Crescent.

Descher also led the defense with nine tackles. Fisher added eight and Wilmoth seven.
