Despite a pair of district losses last week, Kingfisher’s softball team remains in solid position to garner a playoff spot.

The Lady Jackets dropped a 9-2 home bout with Cushing on Monday and then were shutout 8-0 by Newcastle on the road Thursday.

Those losses dropped Kingfisher’s District 4A-1 mark to 2-4 where it sits in a fourth-place tie with Bethany.

However, KHS swept Bethany earlier this year, giving it the tie-breaker.

“It was one of our worst games of the year,” KHS coach Danny Green said of Monday’s setback to the Lady Tigers. “We were very uninspired.”

Coming off the weekend’s runner-up finish in the Highway 33 Classic, KHS fell behind 7-0 to Cushing before posting two runs in the fifth inning.

Mya Dewberry drove in those runs with her lone hit of the game.

The Lady Jackets had seven hits overall, three by leadoff batter Mia Farrell, who also scored a run.

Kingfisher followed that loss with a 6-3 setback at Chisholm on Tuesday in a rematch of the tournament finals.

After being shutout by the Lady Longhorns the previous Saturday, Kingfisher jumped on top 3-0.

Kaycee Karcher drove in two runs and Macy McCully another, both in the third inning.

Olivia Wilcox made that lead stick until the bottom of the sixth when Chisholm scored all of its runs.

Most were unearned thanks to a pair of costly KHS errors.

“We were great for 5 1/2 innings, then that happened,” Green said.

Wilcox gave up seven hits and struck out seven in defeat.

Stats for Thursday’s game weren’t available at press time.

Newcastle’s win over KHS improved it to 5-0 in the district. Cushing was 3-0 in 4A-1 at week’s end.

The Lady Tigers and KHS were in the midst of finishing their double-header Monday when storms moved in and put an end to the nightcap after 1 1/2 innings of a scoreless contest.

The teams will make up the game at a later date.
