Jett’s 44 powers Warriors past Am-Po
Usually the onslaught hits early for Okarche opponents.
For Amber-Pocasset on Friday night, it didn’t happen until the third quarter.
But when it did…. Okarche ran away from another foe as Class A’s top-ranked Warriors out-classed No. 9 Am-Po 94-52.
The home team’s high-powered offense was “limited” to 35 firsthalf points and unbeaten Okarche led by just 11 points at the break.
But the third quarter was a different story.
Okarche outscored the Panthers 35-12 to put the game away.
All told, Okarche outscored Am-Po 59-28 over the final two quarters.
After shooting a respectable 44.4 percent in that first half, Okarche blazed the nets by making 56.8 of their shots in the second.
That included going 11 of 20 from downtown.
And nobody lit them up more than Jett Mueggenborg.
Having already shown the ability to put up big numbers, Mueggenborg took it to another level against the Panthers.
He scored a career- high 44 points and added 10 rebounds and six assists to go with it.
Mueggenborg was 18 of 23 from the field, which included a 6 for 8 showing from 3-point range.
Already with 18 points at half, Mueggenborg mirrored his team’s score and kicked it up a notch in the third with 15.
Not done, he nailed three of his 3-pointers and scored 11 more points in the fourth.
He was one of three Warriors in double figures.
Easton Roby joined him in recording a double- double as the fellow junior scored 12 points and grabbed a game-high 11 boards.
Roby was quiet with two first-half points, but added 10 in the second.
Hunter Mueggenborg chipped in 15 points and six assists. He scored seven in the third-quarter outburst.
The Warriors made 13 3-pointers in all.
Kyson Avila added three of them for all nine of his points.
Okarche improved to 22-0 with its win. The Warriors have won 33 straight games.
No. 5 Am-Po girls escape Okarche
Okarche’s chance to knock off a top-five team slipped through the Lady Warriors’ fingers.
Better yet, it rolled around the rim.
Visiting Amber-Pocasset escaped Okarche with a 37-36 win last Friday.
Ainslee McComas scored the game winner with just seconds to play and Okarche was unable to answer on the other end.
The Lady Warriors had a chance to win despite scoring just four points in the final quarter.
Three of those came on a 3-pointer by Scout Payne to give Okarche a 35-32 advantage.
Okarche held that lead until Am-Po, ranked fifth in Class A, tied the game on Blakely Miller’s three-point play with 2:25 to go.
Katie Parham gave the lead back to Okarche with 1:56 left when she made 1 of 2 free throws.
However, Parham’s opportunity to extend the lead with just over 30 seconds to play didn’t come to fruition as both of her foul shots rolled around the rim and out.
Am-Po took advantage and McComas banked in a runner to give her team the lead for good on its last possession.
It was McComas’ first field goal since the first quarter.
The Lady Panthers, who improved to 19-1, were led by Addison Polson’s 11 points. Sadie Linn scored 10.
All of her’s came in the first half as the visitors staked a 21-14 halftime lead.
Okarche roared back in the third quarter.
Payne and Callie Cramer each made 3-pointers as Okarche outscored Am-Po 18-10 and took a one-point lead.
The Lady Warriors led for a majority of the fourth as well, until the final seconds.
Okarche was just 11 of 22 from the foul line while Am-Po made 17 of 21.
Harper White led the Lady Warriors with 10 points, all in the first half.
Cramer and Payne scored six apiece.
The loss dropped the Lady Warriors to 14-8.
