Lady Eagles push their win streak to 7

The wins keep on coming for the Hennessey girls basketball team.

The Lady Eagles grabbed their seventh straight victory Saturday by holding off Balko/Forgan 36-33 during the Skordle Festival at the Eagle Event Center.

It was Hennessey’s second win of the festival as it also knocked off Shattuck 46-16 on Thursday.

Balko/Forgan was ranked 19th in Class B, giving Hennessey wins over three ranked teams during the current streak.

The Lady Bison depended heavily on the long ball to keep them in it.

They made three in the first quarter and eight in the game.

Hennessey used an 11-5 run in the second quarter for a 21-16 halftime lead, but the Lady Bison closed their deficit to one by the end of the third quarter.

Emma Copeland and Katie Kennedy made 3-pointers and Ally Painter a field goal to help the Lady Eagles keep their lead in the fourth.

Copeland made 1 of 2 free throws to push it to 3533 with 43.3 seconds left.

Balko/Forgan didn’t have a response until 9.0 seconds remained when Brya Appelhans was sent to the line.

She made it a one-possession game with a pair of free throws.

Painter was good on one of her two foul shots with 7.3 seconds left to push it to 36-33.

After multiple timeouts, Balko ran a plan for Halle Littau to tie it with a 3-point attempt.

Littau had three treys already, but missed the shot as time expired.

She was joined by Tenley Malberry in scoring 11 points to lead the visitors.

Copeland and Painter scored nine apiece to lead Hennessey, which improved to 13-6.

Clare Munroe added seven while Kennedy scored five.

Shattuck didn’t offer the same kind of drama.

The Lady Eagles led 32-5 at halftime.

Copeland made four 3-pointers as part of her game-high 19 points.

Munroe added nine.

Eagles drop 2 narrow losses in festival

Heartbreak is one way to describe Hennessey’s Skordle Festival experience in 2025.

The Eagles lost a pair of one-possession games in which they had chances to win or tie at the final buzzer.

The first came Thursday when Shattuck got a late game winner for a 5553 victory.

The Eagles led 53-52 in the final 45 seconds and had a chance to extend it, but Camdyn Richardson missed a pair of free throws.

Shattuck’s Ben Elam didn’t miss with 6 seconds left as his 3-pointer found its mark, giving the Indians a two-point lead.

The Eagles got two looks on the other end, but neither found its mark.

The winning shot capped a big game for Elam, who scored 29 points.

Richardson scored 20 for the Eagles, who also got 13 from Freddy Meraz and 11 from Gunnar Holder.

The Eagles also had the late lead in Saturday’s 5148 overtime loss to Balko/ Forgan.

This time Richardson made two free throws with 10.1 seconds left in regulation to give the Eagles a 43-41 lead.

After a timeout, the Bison managed to send it to overtime with Mason Taylor’s buzzer beater.

Caine Cowan made two free throws late in overtime for a three-point lead and Hennessey missed two opportunities to tie in the final seconds.

Richardson scored 25 in the loss while Hagen Copeland scored 16.

The losses dropped the Eagles to 9-10.
