Myers claims OGA Stroke Play crown
Oddly enough, a hole in which he double bogeyed might have been just the one that won Kingfisher’s Heath Myers the Oklahoma Golf Association Stroke Play Championship last week.
Myers sank a 12-foot putt to salvage a seven on the par-5 12th hole at Oak Tree Country Club’s East course Wednesday to keep within striking distance of Carson Tewell, then played mistake free the rest of the way to claim the title for the first time.
Myers led the three-day tournament by a single stroke over Tewell after each of the first two days, but Tewell scorched the front-nine Wednesday with five birdies to go out in 30.
However, Myers had three birdies of his own on the front to stay within a stroke and pulled even after Tewell bogeyed the 10th hole.
It stayed that way until the 12th when Myers’ second shot went out of bounds.
After dropping the putt for a double bogey, Myers trailed Tewell by two strokes.
He pulled within one when Tewell bogeyed the par-3 14th hole and then the championship turned completely on the 15th.
Tewell bogeyed again on the hole while Myers birdied it for the third consecutive day to reclaim the lead.
He wouldn’t lose it.
The KHS graduate and multiple-time winner of the Kingfisher Golf Association Club Championship made par on the final three holes.
Tewell, meanwhile, doubled bogeyed 18, giving Myers a three-shot victory. Myers finished at 206, a total of 4-under. Tewell was at 209.
Myers shot 2-under 68 in the final round, which he also fired in the opener.
That gave him a single-stroke lead over Tewell and Hunter Laughlin. Myers and Tewell both shot 70s on the second day, but Laughlin fell back with a 73.
Laughlinshot69Wednesday to finish third at 211.
Recent Heritage Hall graduate Will McDonald was fourth at 213. McDonald has signed to play at the University of Arkansas where he’ll join KHS alum Mason Overstreet on the Razorbacks’ golf team.
Myers won the OGA Mid-Amateur title in 2017. He said he plans to play in the OGA State Amateur Championship July 22-24 at Oak Tree National.
