Dover hosts Waukomis; begins play at Mustang Stampede
After having their threegame win streak snapped on Tuesday, the Dover girls rebounded to their winning ways two days later.
The Lady Longhorns opened the Mustang Stampede at Pioneer with a 4924 victory over Coyle.
On Tuesday, Dover was handed a 53-41 defeat at home by Waukomis.
Aleah Melson and Kynslee Cue combined for 42 points for the Lady Chiefs in their season opener.
Melson dropped seven in the first quarter as her team jumped to a 14-3 lead. Kynli Boeckman answered with 10 points in the second quarter as Dover cut its deficit by five points.
But the Lady Longhorns couldn’t cut deeper in the second half.
Ashley Gamez, Boeckman and Presley Squires each made a 3-pointer in the fourth quarter, but Dover was outscored 17-11.
Boeckman and Gamez led the team with 13 points apiece.
It was Dover getting off to the quick start against Coyle as the Lady Longhorns were up 12-0 after a quarter.
Gamez nailed two treys and scored seven in the quarter.
She again finished with 13 points.
Rylee Buck warmed up with three second-half treys as part of her 10 points while Boeckman scored eight.
The Lady Longhorns, now 4-3 on the season, played Medford in the tournament semifinals Friday night after press time of this edition.
Longhorns continue to streak
The win streak jumped to six games for the Dover boys basketball team.
The Longhorns got a pair of lopsided wins as they downed Waukomis 59-30 at home on Tuesday then thumped Burlington 63-28 Thursday in the quarterfinals of the Mustang Stampede basketball tournament at Pioneer.
The Elks had no answer for Lucas Conrady, especially in the first and third quarters.
The Longhorn senior scored 19 of his game-high 21 in those two frames.
That included 10 points in the first quarter as Dover raced to a 21-0 advantage.
It was 36-8 at halftime, then Conrady knocked down a trio of 3-pointers in the third quarter to continue to put the game away.
Jonah Pendergraft scored 13.
Waukomis figured to pose a threat Tuesday as it returned all five starters from last year’s squad.
The Chiefs did just that in the first half as they were within nine at halftime.
However, Pendergraft lit up in the third quarter, sparking Dover to a 22-9 run.
The senior guard scored 11 points and Casen Buck eight more in that spurt.
Pendergraft scored 21 on the night with 17 coming in the second half.
Buck scored 15 while Carter Kitchens contributed 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Like the Lady Longhorns, the Dover boys also played Medford in the semifinals of the tournament at Pioneer Friday.
