Charlie George Mathis
Charlie George Mathis was born Feb. 22, 1940, to Carl and Hattie Mae Mathis in Dover.
Charlie George was the youngest of six siblings.
He was raised in Dover where he attended Booker T. School until 1955 when the schools were integrated.
They moved to Kingfisher where he attended and graduated from Kingfisher High School. He enjoyed and was very active in football and track.
After graduation, he remained in Kingfisher with his parents and worked at Vieth Bros, City Service Station and Sequoyah Mills.
In December 1960 Charlie George joined the National Guard where he served until 1966 as an E3 Private First Class with honorable discharge. On June 16, 1962, he was wedded to Loretta Flynn of Watonga and they resided in Kingfisher.
From this union, he was blessed with two children: his oldest son, Charlie George Mathis, Jr. (little Charlie), and later a daughter, Darla Michelle Mathis.
Later he joined the Kingfisher Police Department and was a patrol officer for many years.
Then he had two more children with Neva Nell Costello: Leslie George Mathis (Baby George) and Neva LaMoin Mathis.
After leaving the police department, he started a small hay hauling business for a few years.
Soon after he moved back to Dover with his life mate, Salina Sue Yarbrough, and went to work for Farrar Construction as a truck driver.
From this union he had two children: Marcelyn Yarbrough and Christopher George Mathis.
They then moved to Enid where they lived and raised their youngest son, Christopher George Mathis.
Salina Yarbrough, his life mate, got her wings on March 31, 2013.
Charlie George continued working for Farrar Construction, from which he retired after 43 years of service.
He remained in Enid where his youngest son and his wife (Chris and Mandy Mathis) cared for him up until he received his wings Friday, Nov. 22, 2024.
Charlie George was preceded in death by his parents Carl and Hattie Mae Mathis; three brothers, Carl Mathis Jr., Jimmy (James) Mathis, and Horace Mathis; two sisters, Mae Lee and Fannie Mae; one son, Charlie George Mathis Jr.; and one grandson, Caeden George Mathis.
Charlie George leaves behind to cherish his memory two sons, Leslie G. Mathis and Christopher G. Mathis and his wife Mandy Mathis; three daughters, Neva L. Mathis, Darla M. Mathis, and Marcelyn Yarbrough; seven grandchildren (six boys and one girl), Leslie G. Mathis, Chad A. Mathis, Trey A. Mathis, Kyler A. Mathis, Cyson G. Mathis, Cam G. Mathis, Cashton L. Mathis and Tiffany G. Mathis; 10 great-grandchildren; his niece Clarissa Owens- Fobbs (Duane); three nephews, Harold Byrd, Christopher Owens Jr. and Dewayne Owens; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Nov. 26, in Kingfisher.
