Davis ground game chews up Eagles in 48-34 victory

Davis had the rush. Hennessey had the pass.

Both were effective, but it was the rush that won out this time.

The Eagles’ season came to an end Friday as they were dealt a 48-34 defeat in the first round of the Class 2A-II playoffs in Davis.

Hennessey finished its year with a 6-5 record.

Senior Gunnar Holder threw for 328 yards and three touchdowns, but once Hennessey fell behind 21-6 in the second quarter, the Eagles were never able to get closer than one touchdown.

The Wolves’ ground game proved too tough to stop.

They attempted only two passes all night, but used their 40 rushes to churn out 443 yards of offense.

Dax Owens and Brenden Rauls each ran for three touchdowns.

Owens picked up 213 yards on just 11 carries. Rauls accounted for 158 yards on his 19 attempts.

Rauls put the Wolves up 21-6 in the second quarter on a 1-yard run.

Holder threw a 55yard TD pass to Kevin Trillo and then hit Jakob Johns with the two-point conversion to answer, but Hennessey couldn’t stop the Wolves.

Rauls added a 2-yard scoring run to continue the teams’ trading of TDs. They were far from finished.

Trillo and Holder connected from 25 yards to make it a 28-21 game, but Rauls got a 13-yard touchdown to push his team back to a 34-21 lead.

Holder turned to the ground before the end of the half as he scored on a 3-yard run to pull the Eagles within 34-27.

That’s as close as they would get.

Davis scored once in each the third and fourth quarters to extend its lead to three touchdowns: Owens on a 52-yard run in the third and then a 10-yarder in the fourth.

Trillo and Holder combined one more time in the fourth quarter as their third TD covered 4 yards.

Half of Trillo’s six receptions went for touchdowns. His catches accounted for 96 yards.

Hagen Copeland hauled in six catches for 86 yards while Hunter Weber added five for 62.

Holder accounted for all five Hennessey touch- downs as he also had a

1-yard scoring run in the fourth quarter. He carried it

31 times for 95 yards.

Holder ran or threw for

423 yards. Hennessey had

439 total yards.
