Hennessey hits the road for pair of early-week games

Hennessey squeezed in a pair of games early in the week as part of a busy stretch.

The Eagles topped Harding Fine Arts 49-34 on the road Monday in a makeup game.

They hit the road again Tuesday and came back from Watonga with a 79-30 victory.

The Harding victory saw Hennessey get off to a slow offensive start.

The Eagles scored just four points in the first quarter and had 19 at the half.

Harding was struggling even more as its four points in the first quarter were the only ones scored in the entire half.

James Sims and Jael Torres combined to score 14 of the Eagles’ second-quarter points.

Camdyn Richardson then heated up in the third.

Richardson knocked down a pair of treys and scored 10 points. Sims added eight more as Hennessey outscored Harding 26-11.

Harding scored 19 of its points in the fourth quarter when coach Brady Page rested most of his starters.

Sims led the Eagles with 18 points while Richardson scored 11 and Torres eight.

There was no slow start Tuesday.

Hennessey made four 3-pointers in the first quarter - two by Richardson - and got out to a quick 10-point lead.

Sims then scored 11 in the second quarter as part of a 25-8 run to stake a 41-14 halftime lead.

Richardson made four treys overall and scored 17 points.

Sims finished with 15, Torres 12 and Brandon Rodriguez notched nine points.

The wins gave Hennessey a three-game win streak and pushed its overall record to 10-2.

Lady Eagles split games

Watonga avenged a loss to Hennessey on Tuesday night with a 52-43 win at home.

Hennessey had prevailed 55-50 in overtime just five days earlier when the two teams met in the opening round of the Three Rivers Conference Tournament.

Hennessey was without starter Amiley Tuell, which coach Brian Richardson said hampered the team’s ability to rebound.

The visiting Lady Eagles tried to make up for it with 3-point shooting.

Hennessey made nine shots from beyond the arc, five of them by Emma Copeland.

She made three of those and Kadee Meeker another as Hennessey got out to an 18-11 lead.

Watonga held Hennessey to six second-quarter points and tied the game.

Meeker knocked down two more treys and Hannah Swart one in the third as Hennessey kept pace, but Watonga had too much firepower down the stretch.

The hosts got field goals from five different players as they outscored Hennessey 15-8.

Copeland led Hennessey with 15 points while Meeker added 11 and Star Torres eight.

It was the second game in as many nights for Hennessey, which won 43-6 at Harding Fine Arts in a makeup game.

The Lady Eagles gave up just two field goals - one in each half - and led 27-3 at halftime.

Meeker and Ally Painter scored eight apiece to lead nine different scorers.

Hennessey was 7-5 after Tuesday’s loss.
