Dover splits conference games with Waukomis
Dover gritted out another tough road win Tuesday night.
The Lady Longhorns held off Waukomis 38-33 to improve to 5-0 on the season.
Katelyn Harviston scored a game-high 17 points and had the Lady Longhorns’ lone fourth-quarter field goal.
Waukomis, playing its first game of the season, trailed by seven entering the fourth.
The Lady Chiefs got 3-pointers from Torie Rhodes and Brinley Pendergraft in the final frame, but couldn’t complete the comeback.
Waukomis was led by Kynslee Cue’s 16 points.
She had 11 at halftime. Dover countered with Harviston and Joi Caldwell.
They scored six apiece in the first quarter as Dover jumped to a 14-7 lead.
Waukomis cut it to a five-point game by halftime, but Harviston’s five points in the third helped Dover once again push it back to seven.
Caldwell finished her night with eight points. Rylee Buck scored six.
Chiefs down ‘Horns
Losses came in two forms for the Dover boys last Tuesday.
Dover dropped a 44-37 contest at Waukomis.
In the process, juniors Nathan Cohee and Luis Valles went down with ankle injuries.
Timetables for their returns were up in the air.
“We were already a pretty young team,” said coach Jared Reese. “That makes us a lot younger with them not on the floor.”
The Chiefs got off to a hot start in their season opener as they knocked down four 3-pointers and led 21-4 after a quarter.
Dover outscored the Chiefs in each of the next two quarters, but never closed the gap.
Before being injured in the second half, Cohee managed 11 points.
The Longhorns, who fell to 2-3, were led by Lucas Conrady’s 13 points.
