Sulphur overwhelms Jackets, 42-7
Kingfisher was going to need a near-perfect game for its season to continue.
It didn’t happen. Sulphur’s defense proved too stingy and its offense opportunistic last Friday as the Bulldogs beat KHS 42-7 in the first round of the Class 3A playoffs.
The road loss ends Kingfi sher’s season with a 4-7 record.
“The guys faced a lot of adversity this season,” said interim head coach Stan Blundell.
“Hopefully they learned about overcoming that and battling through.”
The Jackets lost their first four games of the season before winning four of their final six in the regular season.
They won two of their final three games after head coach Jeff Myers was put on administrative leave.
Kingfisherwasinamustwin situation in Week 10 in order to reach the playoffs for a 24th straight year and beat Anadarko 31-13.
“They had their backs against a wall a lot and found a way to respond,” Blundell said.
The Bulldogs just had too much for the Jackets.
Sulphur improved to 8-3 and travels to Lincoln Christian for its quarterfinal game this week.
As has been the case in most of their losses this season, the Jackets struggled mightily to move the ball against their hosts.
KHS had just 28 total yards at half. Four of their five first-half possessions ended with a punt and the other a fake punt that failed to garner a first down.
Conversely, the Bulldogs scored on their first three possessions and then again on their final one of the first half to stake a 28-0 lead.
The first TD was a 35yard pass from Colten Cole to Briar Davenport.
It came on a 4th-and-15, which proved to be the theme on the Bulldogs’ scoring plays. Most came on third or fourth downs.
Maddax Mobly added a 7-yard run early in the second quarter and later Damontre’ Patterson snagged a would-be interception from Damien Haynes to score on a 66-yard pass.
Cole got his third touchdown pass of the night just before the end of the half with a 20-yard connection with Austin Garrett.
Cole’s fourth touchdown was a 30-yard pass to Trace Todd on the Bulldogs’ first possession of the second half.
They staked a 42-0 lead when Davenport picked off Paytun Burnham and returned it 71 yards for a touchdown.
Burnham was in for starter Jhett Birdwell, but took a big shot on the play and didn’t return.
Combined, the two threw for 67 yards.
The Jackets ran for 93 yards on 29 attempts.
Hunter Delozier got the bulk of those on the Jackets’ final possession.
The senior got seven carries on the drive and collected 58 yards, including a 1-yard touchdown with 21 seconds left.
Ethan Karcher had 17 yards and the Bulldogs limited Dallen Barton to 7 yards on 10 carries.
Sulphur had 366 total yards.
Delozier also led the team with 10 tackles.
Jairo Velarde added seven.
“I’m glad this group of seniors was able to make the playoffs again,” Blundell said. “They were a fun group who didn’t let a lot of the off-the-field stuff bother them. They just asked what they needed to do next and went out and did it.”
