Goldbugs run past Hennessey, 44-7
A massive ground attack was more than Hennessey could handle as the Eagles still seek their first win.
Alva rushed for 438 yards Friday night in a 44-7 home win over the Eagles.
The defeat dropped Hennessey to 0-8, including losses in all five District 2A-1 games. The Goldbugs bumped their record to 4-4 and 3-2 and remained in the playoff hunt.
Lantz Mathers did the bulk of the damage as the Goldbug junior toted it 14 times for 273 yards and four scores.
Half of those TDs came in the first quarter when he scored on runs of 22 and 7 yards as Alva built a 14-0 lead.
Hennessey cut its deficit in half with a 10-play, 82yard drive that began in the first quarter and culminated 30 seconds into the second frame.
The score was a 1-yard run by Jessin Hardin.
But Mathers was able to add two more rushing touchdowns and Alva added a field goal to stake a 30-7 halftime lead.
The Goldbugs averaged 9.5 yards per carry for the game. Mathers averaged 19.5 yards per attempt.
Hennessey’s struggles on the ground continued as it managed 41 yards on 15 attempts.
Hardin led the team with 27 yards on six carries.
Gunnar Holder was 13 of 28 through the air for 83 yards.
The Eagles had 150 total yards.
