Surge sends Chisholm past Eagles
A dominant second half by Chisholm spoiled Hennessey’s homecoming.
The visitors outscored Hennessey by 29 points in the second half Friday night to pull away for a 5224 victory.
The Eagles led by as many as nine points late in the first half, but Chisholm scored in the final minute, which kickstarted a 32-0 outburst that resumed in the third quarter.
The victory pushed the Longhorns to 4-2 overall and 2-1 in District 2A-1.
The Eagles, meanwhile, fell to 0-6 and 0-3.
They were the team that got off to the better start, beginning with a 32-yard field goal from Luis Macias- Montoya for a 3-0 lead in the first quarter.
After the Longhorns answered with a touchdown later in the quarter, Hennessey came right back with consecutive scores in the second.
Both were touchdown passes by Gunnar Holder.
The first was a 16-yard connection with Jessin Hardin to put Hennessey back up by a 10-8 score.
Holder later found Weston Smith with a 53yard strike to give the Eagles a 17-8 lead with 4:14 to go in the first half.
That’s when Chisholm began to take over the game.
The Longhorns scored with under a minute to go in the half to pull within 17-16.
They opened the third quarter with three consecutive touchdowns and two-point conversions to take the lead and extend it to 40-17.
Hennessey had one last punch when Smith and Holder connected for their second score, this one from 50 yards, before the end of the third.
The visitors, however, scored the game’s final two touchdowns to put it away.
Chisholm was solid through the air, but even better on the ground.
Kelson Hamilton threw for 196 yards and three touchdowns, but was also picked off twice.
The Longhorns added 274 rushing yards. Hamilton had two TDs with his feet as well.
Holder went 18 of 30 for 173 yards as the Eagles continued to be effective through the air.
Smith hauled in seven of those passes for 124 yards.
However, Hennessey couldn’t match Chisholm with the rushing attack. The Eagles were limited to 28 yards on 20 carries.
Cam Griffin and Nick Moery led the defense with 11 tackles apiece. Griffin had four tackles for a loss.
Kevin Trillo was also big as he had nine stops, two fumble recoveries and intercepted Hamilton.
Jessin Hardin was in on eight tackles, including four for a loss, while Smith coupled his six tackles with an interception.
Hennessey is one of three teams in 2A-1 without a win this season.
The Eagles will host one of them - Blackwell - on Thursday.
The Maroons are also 0-6 and 0-3 and have scored in double digits just once this season, a 42-16 defeat to Perry in Week 4.
