KHS girls put away Piedmont JV late

Kingfisher didn’t exactly sail through Piedmont JV in the final regular season game.

But the Lady Jackets did enough to enter the playoff on a win streak.

That last-minute guests proved ready to play, but KHS was better in a 41-26 victory Thursday on Senior Night at the APB.

The contest took on several variations before it ever tipped off.

The Senior Night games were originally scheduled for Tuesday, but were pushed back two days after Kingfisher’s district opponent dropped out of the playoffs.

After that move was made, the OKC Storm alerted Kingfisher it didn’t have enough players for a girls game.

Enter Piedmont JV and its roster full of freshmen.

As Kingfisher struggled to get going offensively, the Lady Wildcats led for portions of the first quarter and weren’t put away until the fourth.

Kingfisher scored just 15 points in the first half and didn’t have its first double-digit lead until the third.

Piedmont’s Ava Watkins scored back-to-back buckets to end the third to pull her team within eight.

That’s when KHS showed signs of life on the offensive end.

Addy Matthews and Peyton Walker combined for three straight treys as Kingfisher again got the margin back to double digits.

Matthews made four 3-pointers for all 12 of her points.

Walker scored 11 and made three treys.

Raegan Snider had just one point in the first half, but finished with 10.

Emily Myers - honored before the game along with fellow senior Mya Dewberry - scored six points and also pulled down 11 rebounds.

While Kingfisher’s offense struggled, the defense never let Piedmont get much traction. The visitors had just 16 points through three quarters.

Kingfisher heads into next week’s playoffs with a 19-4 record.

The Lady Jackets will host the winner of this weekend’s district matchup between Bridge Creek and John Marshall next Thursday.
