Girls wrestling program makes strides at regional

Four Kingfisher High School wrestlers reached the quarterfinal round of the girls west regional last week.

However, none of the Lady Jackets was able to wrestle her way into the state tournament.

“We grew and improved a lot this season,” said cocoach Steven Wilson. “I’m very proud of the way they competed and continued to build our program.”

The first day of the tournament saw Emily Warren (115 pounds), Rylee Hamil (125), Zoey Padilla (130) and Mychaela Haynes (135) earn their way into the quarterfinals.

But each one was sent to the consolation bracket after a loss in that round.

Once there, only Hamil was able to win her next match.

After losing to Edmond North’s Taylor Hishaw, Hamil came back to outlast Payton Ayers of Del City, 4-2.

Her season ended in the next consolation round as Yasmin Delgado of U.S. Grant earned a 7-2 victory.

Mylene Jones lost to Cache’s Laurel Hill in the second round of the 105-pound bracket.

After a bye, Jones won two consolation matches before falling in the fifth round to Noble’s Tea Plummer.

Jones and Hamil scored seven points each for KHS.

Haynes scored eight team points while Warren notched six points.

KHS scored 26 points and placed 34th out of 60 teams represented. Girls wrestling isn’t split into classifications.

Cashion scored nine points as a team.

Roman Davis accounted for six of them as she reached the quarterfinals at 155 pounds.

She was defeated there by Izzy Pack of Lexington and then lost her first consolation bout.

Alex Jerry went 1-2 in her matches at 120 pounds and scored three points.
