Dover girls topple K-H for first area trip since 2008
There was a time when Dover was not only a mainstay in the Class B state tournament, but the state title game itself.
The Lady Longhorns played for seven consecutive state championships from 2001-07, winning it all four times.
But Dover hasn’t been back to state since and not since 2008 had the program reached even the area tournament.
The latter streak ends this year.
Dover out-dueled No. 20 Kremlin-Hillsdale 5044 on Thursday in a Class B regional semifinal at Fairview.
The win advanced the Lady Longhorns to Saturday’s regional championship against Lomega. Win or lose, they will move on to this week’s area tournament.
But it wasn’t easy.
The Lady Broncs (19-7) took a 12-8 lead into the second quarter.
Sophomore guard Pepper Elmore made two 3-pointers to lead that charge.
Ashley Gamez and Karlee Harviston had the answer in the second quarter.
The two combined for 13 points as Dover went on a 15-5 run.
That six-point lead was cut in half by the end of the third as Kremlin-Hillsdale made three more 3-pointers, one by Elmore.
However, No. 12 Dover (22-5) did enough at the foul line to preserve the win.
Dover was 11 of 15 from the charity stripe and outscored the Lady Broncs 15-12.
Karlee Harviston was 4 of 6 in the quarter and finished with a team-high 19 points.
Katelyn Harviston made 5 of 7 as part of her 11 points.
Gamez finished the game with 10 points while Rylee Buck scored eight.
Elmore helped keep Kremlin-Hillsdale in it.
She knocked down two more treys and scored eight points in the fourth. Elmore had six 3-pointers in all and led all scorers with 20 points.
Timberlake halts Longhorns’ season
No. 13 Timberlake put an end to Dover’s season on Thursday.
Merric Judd scored 25 points as the Tigers downed Dover 62-46 in a regional consolation game at Fairview.
The Longhorns’ season ended with a 9-17 mark.
Judd had 17 of his points by halftime as the Tigers stretched their lead to 34-22.
Dover kept in it, but couldn’t catch up.
Pedro Valles scored 12 points while Orlando Lozano and Luis Ruiz scored 11 apiece.
Dover also got nine points from Damion Turner.
On top of Judd’s production, Timberlake (24-2) got 12 points from Chase Pierce and 10 from Paxton Glenn.
The Tigers were in the consolation side of the bracket after being upset by Kremlin-Hillsdale in the district championship last week.
