Three Kingfisher High School football players took the next step toward the next level last week.

As a part of National Signing Day, the Jackets’ Wrigley Kennedy, Jax Sternberger and Noah Friesen signed National Letters of Intent.

Kennedy and Sternberger signed with Southeastern Oklahoma State University in Durant while Friesen inked with Southwestern College in Winfield, Kan.

“I’m very proud of them. It’s an exciting day for them and their families,” said KHS head coach Jeff Myers after the signing ceremony held in the Kingfisher High School commons on Wednesday.

“These guys have put in a lot of work and shown an ability and desire to play at the next level, so as a coach it’s very gratifying to see them get that opportunity.”

Kennedy was recently named an Oklahoma Coaches Association All-State selection as an offensive lineman, which is where he’ll play for the Savage Storm.

“I’m assuming I’ll play guard, but I’m not certain yet,” said Kennedy, a threeyear starter at that position for KHS.

Kennedy said he also considered Nebraska-Kearney, but SEOSU “was always the top choice.”

“They had a nice campus, nice facilities and I liked all the coaches a lot,” he said.

Southeastern is already familiar with the Sternberger name.

One of Jax’s older brothers, Jett, is a junior on the Savage Storm men’s basketball team.

He recently took his own official visit to the school.

“It became a pretty clear choice,” he said. “I really liked the facilities and the coaches. I felt they had my best interest in mind and wanted me to succeed.”

Sternberger was a threeyear starter at quarterback, but also started at safety. He’s proven his versatility for the KHS basketball team as well.

He was selected to the Oklahoma Football Coaches Association’s all-star team for Class 3A as a two-way player.

“I believe they want me at wide receiver right now,” Sternberger said of the Savage Storm staff.

Friesen was a multi-year starter at center for the Yellowjackets.

He said Southwestern - home of the Moundbuilders - recruited him at that position.

“But they think I could also play guard for them,” he said.

Recovering from recent surgery to repair a torn labrum, Friesen said he also considered Kansas Wesleyan and Southern Nazarene University as potential landing spots.

“At the end of the day, it came down to which place felt more like home and gave me the best opportunity,” he said. “That was Southwestern College.”
