Kingfisher, Cashion are big basketball locales this week
It’s border to border basketball in Oklahoma this week... including wall to wall in a pair of Kingfisher County gyms.
This week marks the third, final - and biggest - basketball tournament week in the state for the 2022-23 season.
A majority of teams in Oklahoma will take part in the final tournament before the stretch run to the playoffs.
That’s the case here. Kingfisher and Cashion are both hosting their own tournaments and five of the six county teams are in an invitational of some sort.
The lone exception is Hennessey.
The KHS teams will be looking to garner repeat titles at their own Buckle of the Wheatbelt Invitational, which begins Thursday morning at the APB.
In a break from the norm, the Kingfisher teams will play the first two games of the day (10 a.m. and 11:20 a.m.) on Thursday.
The KHS boys have won the tournament six straight years. Kingfisher’s girls are the twotime reigning champs.
The tournament could feature a pair of major showdowns in the championship games on Saturday if the seedings hold up.
The Lady Jackets are ranked No. 6 this week in Class 4A and are the No. 2 seed behind Weatherford, which is ranked No. 4.
On the boys side, Kingfi sher is the No. 1 seed and ranked No. 2 in 4A.
Second-seeded Weatherford is ranked No. 3 and - at press time - is 13-0 on the season.
To the east of here will be the Cashion County Line Tournament, which in a short time has established itself as one of the toughest invitationals in the state.
Lomega’s teams will vie for conference titles in the Cherokee Strip Conference Tournament, which will be held once again at Pioneer- Pleasant Vale High School.
Dover’s squads are in the oldest tournament - the Skeltur Conference - which is now in its 99th rendition.
Okarche is traveling to Coyle where both teams will be the top seeds in that tournament.
Following is a schedule for all the tournaments featuring local teams.
