Dover girls beat Waukomis for fifirst ‘signature’ victory

Over the Thanksgiving break, Dover coach Matt Peck said his team was still searching for that first “signature win” of the season.

His Lady Longhorns were 3-2 at the time and, as he put it, “we’ve beaten the teams we’re supposed to beat and lost to the teams most thought we’d lose to.”

Peck added that he felt Dover’s first opponent back from the break Waukomis - was the first shot to add a quality win.

The Lady Longhorns made just enough free throws down the stretch to pick up a 38-33 home win.

It was Waukomis’ season opener, but the Lady Chiefs thumped Dover 41-15 a year ago.

This year, Dover had that point total before halftime as it led 18-15 at the break.

Katelyn Harviston got the team going early with six first-quarter points.

Hadlee Bryan scored the team’s only two field goals in the second, but Karlee Harviston went 4 for 4 from the foul line.

It was Katelyn Harviston’s turn again in the third as Dover nudged its lead to 26-22 on the strength of six of her points.

The fourth was a group effort. Dover made 6 of 13 free throws to hold off Waukomis.

Ashley Gamez, both Harvistons and Fatima Aboite each made at least one from the charity stripe.

Katelyn Harviston led all scorers with 17 points.

Gamez and Karlee Harviston scored seven apiece as the team improved to 4-2.

Longhorns ousted in OT

Dover did enough to get into overtime.

The Longhorns just couldn’t get over the hump once there.

Waukomis outscored Dover 6-0 in the extra frame to pick up a 43-37 victory in its season opener.

The Longhorns trailed by three entering the fourth, but Damion Turner knocked down two of his five 3-pointers to help erase the deficit.

The shots didn’t fall afterward as the Chiefs got buckets from Blake Landwehr and Dallas Ives in the extra frame.

Turner led Dover (3-3) with 17 points, but was one of only four Longhorns to score.

Kolten Shaw added 10 while Pedro Valles scored eight.
