Cashion plans big night as Watonga visits
Cashion will have a little bit for everyone at this week’s football game. The Wildcats host Watonga at 7 p.m. Friday in a District A-3 matchup.
The game will serve as “Pink Out” as Cashion will join others across the state in helping raise breast cancer awareness.
Fans can particpate in a punt, pass and kick competition held by the Cashion Student Council.
Proceeds will benefit two Cashion students who currently have a parent battling breast cancer.
It’s also Alumni Night for the football program.
Cashion football alumni are encouraged to attend and will receive a ticket for a free meal at the concession tent. (RSVP coach Cale Cochran at 405-202-1400) The football team will be wearing its Rough Rider jerseys during the game in honor of Roy Cashion, for whom the town is named. A Hennessey native, Cashion is an American war hero who gave his life in the Spanish-American War. A graduate of the Hennessey class of 1897, Cashion is said to have had a strong passion and belief in the freedom of the Cuban people. His graduation speech was entitled “Liberty for Cuba.” When the territorial governor asked for volunteers, Cashion’s name was said to be the first one on the list. He passed through the Cashion area on his way to join Teddy Roosevelt’s Rough Riders in the Spanish– American War.
On July 1, 1898, Cashion was killed by a gunshot to the head in the famous charge on San Juan Hill in Cuba.
He is believed to be the first Oklahoman to die in battle on foreign soil.
