Kingfisher set to host 4A baseball regional this week
If Kingfisher is going to make a return to the state baseball tournament for the first time since 2009, it may very well have to go through the team that’s ended its season the last two years. KHS will host a 4A regional beginning Thursday as four teams will vie for one of eight spots at next week’s state tournament. The host Yellowjackets will open the regional by playing Sulphur at 11 a.m. The other first-round matchup pits Heritage Hall against Clinton. The Chargers defeated KHS in regional finals in both 2017 and 2018, both on the Chargers’ home field. However, Kingfisher won District 4A-2 this year, earning the right to host. Heritage Hall was the runner-up to Harrah in 4A-4, Clinton took third in 3A-1 and Sulphur was fourth in 4A-3. The double-elimination bracket will feature four games Thursday, two on Friday and one, if necessary, on Saturday. KHS has had to fight through the loser’s bracket each of the last two years after losing the regional opener. Last year the Jackets forced the “if” game with Heritage Hall before losing 3-2. The Jackets enter the regional with a 29-6 record. They are coming off wins of 6-2 over Mount St. Mary last Saturday and 11-10 over Piedmont on Monday. KHS is one shy of the school record for wins set in the 2017 season. Following is a complete regional schedule. Times and days are possible to change due to weather:
