KHS, Cashion tackle first, only football scrimmages Thursday
Kingfisher and Cashion were among the Oklahoma high school football teams that got their first live action of the season on Thursday.
KHS traveled to Fairview for its first and only scrimmage of the season. The teams were joined by Watonga.
“It looked like it was a first scrimmage,” said head coach Jeff Myers, entering his 19th season with the program.
“We need to get more polished and need to be more physical as a team.”
The Jackets are implementing a new-look offense this season that will be more run-heavy.
“I felt we got off to a slow start, but we finished well,” said Derek Patterson, the co-offensive coordinator. “We ran it really well.”
Myers said he saw some bright spots, but wants to see more of them.
“We did some good things, but they were few and far between,” he said. “We need to be more consistent.”
On the injury front, Myers said the team had a couple of players “dinged up” but doesn’t expect any of the injuries to carry over into this Friday’s season opener at Clinton, the Class 4A defending state champ.
Cashion has won the last two Class A state titles, but has a number of standouts to replace.
The Wildcats hosted Perry and Pawnee in their scrimmage.
“There were times when we looked nervous,” said head coach Lynn Shackelford.
Some of the key replacements are in the trenches.
“Our offensive line needs to get better,” Shackelford said.
On the bright side? “Our defense was better than I thought it would be going in,” he said.
Even brighter? “Nobody got hurt, which was the biggest thing,” he added.
Cashion hosts Rejoice Christian, which beat Cashion in last year’s season opener for the Wildcats’ only loss in their last 31 games.
