KHS splits Highway 33 openers

Kingfisher split its first two games Thursday in the Highway 33 Classic softball tournament.
The Lady Jackets opened pool play on their main field with a 10-1 victory against Watonga before falling later in the day to defending champ Dibble, 9-1.
KHS had one game remaining Friday in pool play (after press time) before the tournament wrapped up Saturday.
KHS was set to play Piedmont JV in the final pool play game. Piedmont’s varsity softball team is the defending Class 5A champion and is 11-0 so far this season.
The JV team beat Watonga 7-2 and then held off Dibble 4-2 on Thursday.
The Lady Jackets scored at least one run in each of the first four innings against Watonga. It was the team’s second win over the Lady Eagles this season.
Four runs came in the second inning, including an RBI double off Merrin Evans’ bat.
Kingfisher also took advantage of a pair of Watonga errors in the frame.
Addyson Willson’s single in the third scored Siera Stitt, who had earlier walked and advanced on Jancee Matthews’ hit.
Matthews made it 7-0 in the fourth with a hit that scored Kynli Boeckman.
That was the start of another four-run inning.
Taylor Mills’ grounder resulted in two Watonga errors that plated two runs and Natalie Dick wrapped things up with an RBI single.
KHS had 10 hits in the game, three of them by Willson, who scored twice.
Matthews and Mills also scored two runs each.
Matthews, Dick and Evans had two hits apiece.
Evans grabbed the win with four innings of work. She allowed just one hit and an unearned run while striking out three.
Dick pitched the final inning.
Dibble’s Sabra Spieker was able to cool off the Kingfisher bats.
She limited the Lady Jackets to four hits over five innings.
The Lady Demons scored six times in the second inning to build a lead.
It grew to 7-0 after four innings before Kingfisher scored in the top of the fifth.
Matthews walked, advanced to third on Willson’s single and eventually stole home.
Boeckman and Mills had Kingfisher’s other hits in the game.
