Seiling holds off furious Cashion comeback
The joy of Cash-ion’s first-ever conference tournament championship ended on Tuesday night.
The Wildcats dug themselves a massive hole, got out of it, but faltered late in a 61-60 loss at Seiling.
“It was the classic case of a Saturday championship hangover,” said Cashion coach John Hardaway, who saw his team’s nine-game win streak come to an end. “Some of our youth and inexperience really showed up early.”
Cashion was down 18-3 after a quarter and saw the deficit grow to 25-4 in the second.
The Wildcats cut into Seiling’s lead and trailed 34-19 at halftime, but it was back at 16 points after three quarters.
Finally, Cashion looked like the team that won the Three Rivers in the fourth quarter, outscoring Seiling 26-11.
And the Wildcats had a chance to win, but Jacob Woody’s putback at the front of the rim missed its mark as the final horn sounded.
“We were the better team for most of the final three quarters,” Hardaway said. “But our start was too much to overcome.”
Woody led all scorers with 21 points while Alex Nabavi added 14.
Jonah Jenkins scored 12 more.
It was Cashion’s second straight heart-breaking loss to the Wildcats, who used late free throws in last year’s match-up to win, ironically, 61-60.
Cashion is 11-3 after the loss.
Top-ranked Seiling
cruises to win
It wasn’t the marquee matchup of a year ago, but it had the same result.
Seiling dominated the first three quarters en route to beating Cashion’s girls 70-38 Tuesday night in Seiling.
The visiting Lady Wildcats had 14 first-quarter turnovers in falling behind 17-3.
Macy Gore then lit up the scoreboard in the second quarter as Seiling extended its lead to 43-15.
Gore, who has helped lead the Ladycats to three consecutive Class A state championships, scored 17 of her game-high 21 points in the second quarter.
Karly Gore, her twin sister, added 14 points, most of which came early in the third when Seiling pushed the lead to 56-16.
Cashion was led by freshman Issy Reeves’ 11 points.
Kaitin Taylor added eight and Neeley Bedick seven.
Cashion dropped to 10-5 while Seiling improved to 12-1.
