Family Reunion Out West
Nybergs have more fun than Lewallens as Seiling earns sweep against Lomega
A family gathering Saturday in Seiling didn’t go Kevin Lewallen’s way.
Braci Nyberg scored 35 points in just three quarters as Class A’s third-ranked Seiling toppled Class B No. 1 Lomega 83-66.
Nyberg is the daughter of Brandi (Lewallen) Nyberg, who played a big part in Lomega’s lore as she earned All-American status in the 1980s.
Brandi is Kevin’s older sister.
Kevin’s niece - Braci - made sure Lomega’s potent offense couldn’t keep up.
She scored 11 first-quarter points as Seiling got out to a 22-14 lead.
She then knocked down three 3-pointers and scored 15 points in the second quarter as the Ladycats’ lead grew to 44-27.
Still not done, Nyberg scored 10 more points in the third as Seiling grew its lead by 11 more points.
Nyberg was able to offset a 21-point performance from Lomega’s Sydni Walker.
The junior also scored all of her points through three quarters.
Only one other Lady Raider scored in double figures as Monse Rivera netted all 12 of her points in the fourth quarter.
Seiling was able to hold Lomega’s two leading scorers – Abby Swart and Darcy Roberts – to a combined 10 points.
Hensley Eaton added seven for Lomega, all in the first quarter.
Seiling also got 16 points from Kenly Gore and 12 from Isabella Hammons.
Nyberg, Gore and Hammons are all sophomores, for Seiling, which improved to 18-3.
Lomega is now 17-5.
Wildcats out-duel Raiders in win
Seiling had one more consistent scorer than Lomega on Saturday night.
That proved to be enough.
Three Wildcats scored in double figures as they pulled away from the Raiders in the fourth quarter for a 67-54 home win at the Ward Center.
Seiling outscored its guests 20-10 in the fourth.
Jaron Hunter scored eight points and Jacob Colvard added six more in the fourth to add to what was already a massive night by Hudson Hamar.
Hamar scored 29 points to lead all scorers.
Hunter finished with 18 and Colvard 14.
All three are sophomores for Class A’s 12thranked team.
Lomega countered with huge nights from Kelby Ott and Owen Duffy.
Both scored six in the first quarter as Lomega took a 16-13 lead.
Duffy added eight more in the second, but was the only Raider to notch a field goal over those eight minutes.
Still, Seiling only led by two points at half and by three after three quarters.
Ott scored eight in both the third and fourth quarters.
He finished with six 3-pointers and 24 points. Snowden scored 21, but
Lomega couldn’t keep up with the Wildcats in the fourth.
The Raiders were 14-8 after the loss.
