KHS girls part of history in loss

A six-game win streak came to an end Tuesday for the Kingfisher Lady Jackets.
It took one of the best teams in Class 5A - and a record breaker - to get it done.
El Reno made four clutch free throws down the stretch to hold off KHS and win 38-34 at Jenks Simmons Fieldhouse.
Tetona Woods-Blackowl knocked down a pair of foul shots with 15 seconds remaining to give the Lady Indians a four-point lead.
Then, after Allison Green made two free throws of her own to make it a two-point game, Ashlyn Evans-Thompson iced it at the free throw line with 6.5 seconds to play.
Those shots capped a game that saw Kingfisher command the first and third quarters and the home team control the second and fourth frames.
It also saw Evans-Thompson become the school’s all-time leading scorer in 5-on-5.
Her bucket just seconds before the halftime buzzer ended a 17-3 quarter for the Lady Indians.
Evans-Thompson scored nine of those points as they erased what was a 12-5 Kingfisher lead entering the quarter.
That bucket gave Evans-Thompson the El Reno record, one that had stood for 23 years.
But Kingfisher didn’t fold after trailing 22-15 at the half.
In fact, the Lady Jackets started the third quarter on a 10-0 run thanks to two Allison Green treys and another from Makina Frost.
El Reno didn’t score until 2:53 remained in the quarter.
However, after the 3-point barrage that prompted El Reno’s timeout at 3:11 of the third, KHS had just two more field goals the rest of the game.
The Lady Indians were able to outscore Kingfisher 7-3 the rest of the quarter.
Evans-Thompson scored seven of El Reno’s nine points in the fourth and ended her night with 18.
The Lady Indians were ranked third in the final Class 5A rankings and were just a few days removed from defeating second-ranked and defending state champ Sapulpa in the semifinals of a tournament in Shawnee.
Kingfisher got off to its strong start thanks again to Rayland Garner.
El Reno had no answer for the senior forward as she scored nine of Kingfisher’s 12 first-quarter points.
She ended her night with 16.
Green scored 11 and Frost six.
The loss dropped Kingfisher to 12-3 on the season.
The team’s last loss was Dec. 27 to Putnam City North in the opening round of the Mustang Holiday Classic.
