Watonga picks up sweep over HHS
Hennessey suffered its second narrow loss to Watonga in just a matter of days.
The Eagles went on the road Tuesday and were knocked off 61-56 in overtime by Watonga.
The two had just met last Friday in the semifinals of the Three Rivers Conference Tournament as Watonga emerged by four points in that win.
“We had several chances to win and they made the big plays when they needed them,” said Hennessey coach Brady Page after his team dropped to 6-5 with its third straight loss.
The visiting Eagles led by two entering the fourth quarter, but were outscored 7-5 in the fourth.
Hennessey was just 1 of 4 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter.
In overtime, the Eagles struggled to maintain Deondre Dunn.
The guard scored eight of
Watonga’s 10 points in the extra frame.
He finished with a gamehigh 28.
Jael Torres paced Hennessey with 19 points while Cristian Rodriguez added 16.
Rodriguez buried four 3-pointers, but had no field goals the final 12 minutes.
Hennessey knocked down three total treys in the first quarter as it staked a 19-14 lead.
Timmy Perry made two of those, but was held without another field goal.
Torres scored six in the first quarter as well.
The loss dropped Hennessey to 2-1 in conference regular season games.
Watonga pulls away in girls matchup
Watonga had too much firepower as it defeated Hennessey 60-27 in their Three Rivers Conference girls matchup.
Playing at home Tuesday, Watonga notched double figures in every quarter and had three players score in double figures.
The hosts led 15-3 after a quarter and continued to build on it.
Natalie Walker and Jaiden Alexander scored 15 apiece for 2A’s 19th-ranked team.
Harlee Dowell paced Hennessey with 10 points.
All but six of Hennessey points came from 3-pointers. Dowell made three of those treys.
Hennessey dropped to 4-7 overall and 1-2 in the conference.
