Yukon tops Jackets for 5th place at Woodward
The downside of Kingfi sher winning its first basketball game in the opening round of the fifth annual Winter Classic last Thursday was the reality of the opponent in the semifinal.
Reality bit Friday in the form of Weatherford, which handed KHS a 6719 defeat at Boomer Fieldhouse in Woodward before cruising the tournament championship the next day.
The Jackets eventually settled for fourth place after Saturday’s loss to Yukon.
Weatherford last season ended Kingfisher’s yearslong home winning streak and eventually was the Class 4A state runner-up.
The Eagles return all five starters and are the favorite to claim gold this season.
They looked every bit the part as they led the Jackets 23-0 after a quarter and 40-2 at halftime.
Kingfisher struggled to handle Weatherford’s pressure from the tip.
The Jackets turned it over 29 times, which led to 47 Eagle points.
Ethan Sage poured in 30 points on 11 of 15 shooting.
C.J. Nickson added 13 for the Eagles.
Kingfisher was led by Coleman Gilles’ six points. Jhett Birdwell scored five.
