Warriors can’t overcome shooting woes
Foul trouble and some ice-cold shooting caught up to the Okarche Warriors.
They had their five-game winning streak snapped Saturday in a 62-55 defeat to host Leedey in the championship game of the South Canadian Classic.
The cold shooting came in the form of the Warriors making just 3 of 25 from 3-point range.
That included a 1 of 13 effort in the first half and 2 of 12 in the second.
The foul trouble - at least early on - saddled Hunter Mueggenborg and Easton Roby.
Both players recorded their third fouls in the first quarter, relegating them to the bench for long stretches.
Mueggenborg never was able to shake the foul trouble as he notched just over eight minutes before fouling out.
Leedey took advantage in the first half and built a 34-28 lead.
The Warriors began to storm back with a strong third, outscoring their hosts 21-11 to take a fourpoint lead into the final quarter.
But the hosts were able to dominate the final stretch with a 17-6 run.
Leedey’s Alex Kadavy proved a load for the Warriors to handle.
He scored 27 points on 12 of 14 shooting.
Tyler Price added 12 for the Bison.
Okarche was led by Wyatt Pinkerton’s 15 points. He made all three of the Warriors’ treys.
Roby came back to score 15 as well.
Braxton Smith recorded a double-double with his 11 points and 10 rebounds.
Four Warriors reached double figures in Friday’s 74-39 manhandling of Hammon in the semifinals.
The Warriors built up a 26-point lead by halftime.
Jett Mueggenborg led the way with 20 points and seven rebounds.
Pinkerton scored 16, Roby 15 and Hunter Mueggenborg 12.
Saturday’s loss dropped Okarche’s record to 5-2.
The Lady Warriors were 4-4 at the tournament’s end.
After defeating Balko in the opener, Okarche lost 65-49 to Class A No. 4 Red Oak in the semifinals and then 62-47 to Class B No. 9 Leedey in the third-place game on Saturday.
