Trio of Jackets sweep conference honors
If it seems like deja vu when it comes to the Canadian Valley Conference basketball honors, it’s for good reason.
Kingfisher High School’s Trey Green and Jett Sternberger were named 2019 co-MVPs of the conference and Jared Reese the coach of the year after a vote of the conference coaches.
It’s exactly how the awards played out a year ago as well.
For Sternberger, it’s a third consecutive conference MVP honor as he was the sole recipient in 2017.
For the second straight year, Green and Sternberg-er led KHS to a 12-0 record in the regular season and then a win in the conference playoff championship game.
That was a 64-46 win over Washington.
Overall, KHS finished 28-1 and won the Class 4A championship for the second time in three years.
Green led the team this season with 16.3 points per game and was second on the team in both rebounds (5.1) and assists (2.6) per game.
Sternberger averaged 15.8 points, 4.4 rebounds and 1.8 assists per contest.
Joining them on the all-conference team were sophomores Matthew Stone and Bijan Cortes.
Stone averaged 13.6 points, 6.1 rebounds and 1.6 assists.
Cortes led the team in assists at 4.9 per game. He also scored 11.0 points and grabbed 3.6 rebounds.
Reese has now won coach of the year honors three consecutive years.
His teams have lost just one conference game during that stretch.
Senior Katelyn Stolz and junior Hanna Matthews were named all-conference for the KHS girls.
Stolz led the team with 9.9 points and 5.2 rebounds a game.
Matthews scored 7.7 points, grabbed 3.7 rebounds and also led the team with 2.7 assists per contest.
