Tough stretch continues for Raiders; Seiling avoids upset

Ben Marsh made five 3-pointers in Lomega’s showdown with Class A No. 6 Seiling.
He just needed one more. Marsh’s 3-pointer from the corner fell short on Saturday as the Raiders’ furious rally also came up short in a 62-59 defeat.
Lomega was down 14 points after three quarters and trailed by as many as 17 before storming back.
The 3-pointer got them there as Lance Yost made two, and Brooks Uhlenhake and Marsh one each to get Lomega within five points with under 30 seconds to play.
Then Marsh nailed another trey to get the Raiders within 61-59 with 14 seconds left.
It took Lomega eight seconds to foul, sending Hudson Hamar to the line.
The Wildcat made his first free throw, but missed his second, giving Lomega the chance to tie.
Kelby Ott’s screen attempted to free up Marsh, but the game-tying shot missed its mark.
Hamar scored 20 points to lead three Seiling players in double figures.
He scored 14 in the first half as Seiling claimed a 3927 advantage.
Yost scored 19 for the Raiders and had four 3-pointers on the night.
Marsh finished with 17. The loss was Lomega’s fourth straight, the last three to ranked teams.
That included Friday night’s 54-49 setback to Class B No. 13 Timberlake.
Lomega trailed by 10 at halftime of that game.
Marsh and Ott combined to score 15 in the third quarter as the Raiders pulled within six, but they couldn’t complete the comeback.
Owen Duffy scored 14 to lead Lomega.
Ott and Marsh had 10 apiece.
Lomega was 15-9 entering the final game of the regular season on Tuesday (after press time).
All four losses in the current streak were by single digits.
“We played well on Saturday, but just came up short,” coach Justin Edsall said of the loss to 18-1 Seiling.
“It’s been a tough stretch, but as long as we keep the right mindset and don’t get beat down mentally, we will grow from it.”
