They Forgot About Tre
Freshman’s putback helps El Reno halt KHS win streak
It was more than a year in the making.
It came to an end in just a few seconds.
Kingfisher’s 34-game win streak came to a halt Tuesday thanks to a last-second tip-in on the road.
The El Reno Indians celebrated a 45-43 win over the Jackets when freshman Tre Davis’s putback found the bottom of the net with just .4 of a second remaining.
Kingfisher’s desperation play after a timeout never materialized as it suffered its first loss since falling to Edmond Memorial on Dec. 12, 2020.
“It’s disappointing to have it end like that, but there was a lot that led to it,” said coach Jared Reese, whose team is now 14-1 on the season.
The Jackets surrendered an eight-point halftime lead, gave up nine offensive rebounds to the Indians and turned it over 16 times.
Still, they had the ball with the game tied and time winding down.
That’s when El Reno’s Evan Roman Nose poked the ball away from Xavier Ridenour.
After that, Roman Nose lost control and after he and Ridenour both dove for the ball, it went out of bounds under El Reno’s basket after last touching the Yellowjacket.
With 4.7 seconds left,El Reno got the ball into big man James Reveles, whose shot rolled off the front of the rim.
Davis was there to clean it up and give his team the win.
The dramatic finish put an end to a back-and-forth affair.
The Indians led 10-3 early and had a 3-pointer for a potential 10-point lead just miss.
The Jackets stormed back to tie the game at 11-all after a quarter, then outscored the Indians 15-7 in the second.
Caden Kitchens and Ridenour combined for 11 of those 15.
Carter Roman Nose came alive in the third to score 10 points as the Indians outscored the Jackets 17-7 and reclaimed a two-point lead.
Ridenour scored five early points and then Maddox Mecklenburg drained a 3-pointer with 2:18 left to give KHS a 43-39 lead.
The Jackets didn’t score again.
El Reno tied the game with 1:32 to play when Reveles drew a double team in the post and passed to a wide open Davis for an easy bump off the glass.
Kingfisher worked the clock down and, after a time out, saw Evan Roman Nose make his big defensive play.
Carter Roman Nose led the Indians with 10 points. Reveles added eight as six different Indians scored at least five points.
The Jackets got 17 from Ridenour while Kitchens scored nine and Mecklenburg seven.
The Jackets shot 42 percent overall, which included 5 of 21 (23.8 percent) from 3-point range.
They were out-rebounded 28-20 and El Reno notched 18 points off the Jacket turnovers.
