A Tale of Two Road Games
Cashion girls win big at Fairview; boys scratch and claw for victory
Cashion gets more dominant each time it plays Fairview.
The Lady Wildcats got their third win over Fairview this season on Tuesday as they won 61-30 in a Three Rivers Conference road game.
The first time they played, Cashion squeezed out an eight-point win in the opening round of the conference tournament.
They met again two weeks later on the second day of Cashion’s tournament and the Lady Wildcats won by a more comfortable 14-point margin.
This time around, Cashion led by 12 after the first quarter.
Fairview was able to trim it to 11 points by halftime, but an 18-5 run in the third swung the momentum in Cashion’s favor for good.
Three Lady Wildcats reached double figures, led by Lauren Lamb’s 19 points.
Lauren Jenkins added 15 more while Brook Shelly scored 13.
The win was Cashion’s third straight and seventh in its last nine games.
The team is now 10-8 overall and 2-2 in conference games.
Wildcats escape Echo Dome with 3-point win
Cashion didn’t make many free throws.
But it did make just enough.
Class 2A’s third-ranked Wildcats escaped an upset loss Tuesday when they pulled out a 41-38 victory at Fairview.
They led 34-27 entering the fourth, but the Yellowjackets pulled within one on freshman Jax Bernard’s bucket with 19.9 seconds left.
Cashion’s Vance Raney and Austin Frazier went a combined 2 of 4 from the foul line over the final 13.8 seconds and Jonah Jenkins made a heads-up play on defense to help seal the win.
It wasn’t until the Yellowjackets’ desperation 3-pointer at the buzzer missed that the win was fully secured.
It might have been earlier, but Cashion was just 3 of 7 on free throws over the final 49 seconds.
The Wildcats were only 4 of 13 for the game.
However, they did outscore Fairview 27-15 from 3-point range.
Raney knocked down three treys and led the team with 10 points.
Trey Tichenor added two more as part of his seven points.
Frazier had eight points and eight boards while Jonah Jenkins added six points and eight rebounds.
Cashion also got six points from Nick Nabavi.
The Wildcats led 11-8 after a quarter, but found themselves trailing 20-19 at halftime.
A 15-7 run in the third allowed them to take the lead into the final quarter.
Cashion is now 13-5 overall and 4-0 in Three Rivers Conference games.
