Stone, UNT win NIT championship
The winning hasn’t stopped for Matthew Stone at the collegiate level.
The former Kingfisher High School basketball standout on Thursday night collected more hardware.
The University of North Texas defeated Alabama- Birmingham 68-61 in the champinoship game of the National Invitation Tournament at Orleans Arena in Las Vegas.
Stone played eight minutes and grabbed a rebound in the win.
The NIT title capped a 31-7 season for the Mean Green, which set a school record for wins.
Stone is no stranger to that.
He was a starter for four years at KHS from the 2017-18 season through 2020-21.
During that time, KHS was an astounding 107-4.
The Jackets won Class 4A state titles during his sophomore year in 2019 and senior year in 2021.
KHS was the state runner- up in 2018 and the 2020 season was shortened by COVID.
The 28-win seasons of 2018 and 2019 tied school records.
The .964 win percentage during his career at KHS was the best fouryear stretch of any boys team in state history.
Stone scored more than 1,500 points during his career at KHS.
During his sophomore season at UNT, Stone averaged 2.6 points and 2.2 rebounds a game.
During the run to the NIT title, UNT defeated Alcord State and Sam Houston at home before going on the road to eliminate Oklahoma State to earn a sport in the NIT semifinals.
There the Mean Green beat Wisconsin 56-54. Stone had three points and four rebounds in that victory.
