Scoring drought costly for KHS girls at 4A area
Scoring droughts have plagued Kingfisher throughout the 2018-19 season.
On Thursday night, one helped end it.
The Lady Jackets went without a point in the second quarter and scored just six over the middle two frames in a 45-27 season-ending loss to Weatherford in Washington.
The defeat in the Class 4A area consolation quarterfinal gives KHS a 14-13 record for the year.
Three of those losses came to Weatherford, which moved within two wins of a state berth.
Kingfisher got out to an 8-5 lead in the first quarter, but then went more than a quarter without a point.
The Lady Eagles closed the first quarter on a 7-0 run and then defense took over for both teams.
While Kingfisher’s score remained the same, Weatherford was only able to tack on four points.
In the third, though, the advantage continued to grow as Weatherford outscored KHS 14-6 to push its lead to 16 points.
Hanna Matthews and Maddie St. Cyr made fourth-quarter 3-pointers while Brooklyn Whipple scored five in the final quarter, but it proved too little, too late.
Weatherford matched with treys from Lyric Neugent and Bailee Pond and also made 5 of 6 free throws to help keep its margin.
The Lady Eagles were led by Abby Hoffman’s 13 points. Ashlyn Sage scored
11.
Whipple paced KHS with 10 points.
Katelyn Stolz added six.
It was the final game in a KHS uniform for those two seniors as well as St. Cyr, Rilee Barton, Emma Wood, Bree Taylor and Brennen Davis.
That group helped KHS reach area three straight years.
