Cashion makes smooth transition to basketball court
Landon LaGasse won a football state championship on Saturday, then dropped a double-double on Thomas three days later.
The Cashion Wildcats made their long-anticipated debut Tuesday as they dealt Thomas a 79-31 defeat on its own court.
The game started about 76 hours after Cashion’s football season ended with a state title.
LaGasse was among a handful of Wildcats who hoisted the gold ball in Edmond and also took to the hardwood in Custer County.
He was one of four Wildcats in double figures as he scored 14 points, grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds and also had four blocks.
Cashion is currently ranked second in Class 2A and returns most everyone from a team that advanced to the state tournament last year.
Among them are Jonah Jenkins, Vance Raney and Austin Frazier, all of whom scored in double digits as well.
Jenkins poured in a game-high 18 points and also had six rebounds.
Frazier added 16 points, seven boards and five steals.
Raney knocked down 15 points.
That trio was a com bined 14 of 21 from twopoint range and combined to make five of the team’s nine 3-pointers.
Cashion led 20-4 after a quarter and pushed its lead to 30 points by halftime. The Wildcats outscored Thomas by at least eight points in every quarter while forcing 25 turnovers and limiting the Terriers to 26 percent shooting.
This was Cashion’s lone tune-up prior to taking part in the 56th Tournament of Champions.
The Wildcats play 6A No. 3 Jenks at 1:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 27, at the BOK Center in Tulsa.
