Richardson debuts a success for HHS
Tougher tests lay ahead, but Brian Richardson’s debut as Hennessey girls basketball coach was a successful one.
The Lady Eagles opened their season last Tuesday with a 65-12 victory against Harding Fine Arts.
“We’re a work in progress,” said Richardson in acknowledging the win and the opponent.
Richardson took over the task of the Hennessey rebuild beginning last summer.
He was instantly hit with a double-dose of bad luck at Frontier Team Camp when junior Katie Kennedy and sophomore Emily Goff went down with significant knee injuries.
Another player still looking to get cleared for eligibility has Richardson searching where points will come from on a roster that now consists mostly of freshmen and sophomores.
The scoring wasn’t an issue against Harding, however.
Three Lady Eagles reached double figures and the team scored at least 14 points in every quarter.
Hennessey was up 16-0 after a quarter as Star Torres sparked the start with nine points.
It was 30-2 by halftime as Richardson had already begun to pull back on the reins.
One of the few upperclassmen, senior Kadee Meeker led the team with 14 points. She knocked down a trio of 3-pointers in the game.
Torres and Emma Copeland scored 12 points
apiece.
Trio score 18 each as Eagles soar to 75-21 win
There wasn’t just one Richardson making his Hennessey debut last week.
Moments after Brian Richardson won his first game as the Lady Eagles’ head coach, his sons donned the blue and white uniforms for the first time.
Like their father, the brothers ensured it was a successful start as Hennessey thumped visiting Harding Fine Arts 75-21.
Camdyn Richardson was one of three Eagles to score 18 points in the victory.
Like the girls game, this one was over early. The Eagles got out to a 27-2 lead after a quarter and pushed it to 52-3 by halftime.
Richardson scored 11 in that first frame.
James Sims added nine points and Hunter Weber seven in the second-quarter outburst.
Sims and Weber also scored 18 points each. Weber buried four 3-pointers as part of his night.
The Eagles also got nine points from Jael Torres.
Camdyn’s brother, Braedyn Richardson, came off the bench, played in all four quarters and scored a point for the Eagles.
After hosting Crooked Oak Friday night (after press time of this edition), Hennessey will take part in this week’s Frontier Shootout tournament.
