REPEAT PERFORMANCE

It was a bit of deja vu for Maddi Kamas at the 2021 Oklahoma Golf Association Junior Girls Championship.

For the second straight year, Kamas stormed to the stroke play championship which gave her the No. 1 seed in the match play portion.

And, for the second straight year, Kamas fell short of making it a sweep.

Kamas was defeated 3&2 Thursday by Jenks’ Jenni Roller in the semifinals at Kickingbird Golf Course in Edmond.

Roller went on to/b> win the match play championship.

Kamas was the match play runner-up after winning the stroke play crown in 2020.

The recent Kingfisher High School graduate trailed Raychel Nelke of Pocola by two strokes after last Monday’s first round of stroke play.

Nelke shot a 3-under-par 67 to lead Kamas and Edmond’s Olivia Coit.

But Kamas caught fire in the second round of stroke play on Tuesday.

She fired a bogey-free 65 for a 134 total to eventually beat Nelke by four strokes. Nelke’s 138 was a stroke better than Coit

Roller finished stroke play fourth with a 145.

The top-16 golfers from stroke play advanced to the match play portion.

Kamas opened Wednesday with a 6&4 win over 16th-seeded Ramsey Gunter of Edmond.

That pitted her later Wednesday against Burneyville’s Jaci Hartman, the ninth seed.

Kamas won that match in 19 holes to advance to take on Roller in the semifinals on Thursday morning.

After beating Kamas, Roller defeated Coit 3&2 for the title. Coit had knocked off Nelke in her semifinal match.

Kamas, who won the 2021 Class 4A girls golf championship by 20 strokes, has signed to continue her golf career at Oklahoma City University.

A KHS valedictorian, Kamas also earned a full ride scholarship at OCU’s Meinders School of Business.
