Perry picks up sweep of Hennessey
Perry got the best of a battle of ranked 3A squads Friday night in what could also be a playoff preview.
The 10th-ranked Maroons escaped No. 12 Hennessey with a 56-50 victory.
Three Eagles scored in double figures…but also only three Eagles scored on the night.
Angel Rodriguez led all scorers with 27 points, but he was also the only Hennessey player able to score in the fourth quarter.
The Eagles led 28-26 at halftime, but the Maroons got 10 points from Mason Drake on the way to taking a 45-42 lead after three quarters.
Drake and three other Maroons contributed in the fourth while Hennessey managed just four field goals from Rodriguez.
The Eagles got 13 points from Juan Dominguez and 10 from Wade Vinson. The duo combined for five 3-pointers, but all their scoring was done through the first three quarters.
Rodriguez buried four treys for the game.
Drake finished with 19 as Perry improved to 15-5.
Hennessey dropped to 14-4 ahead of a busy week. The Eagles played Tuesday (after press time) against Thomas before hosting Cashion on Wednesday, Blackwell on Thursday and Chisholm on Friday to wrap up their regular season.
Lady Maroons start sweep
Perry overcame a slow start offensively to pull away from Hennessey 64-51 in the girls game and begin the road sweep.
The Lady Eagles held Perry to eight first-quarter points, but the visitors scored at least 15 points in each of the final three quarters.
That started in the second when Perry reclaimed the lead with a 20-11 run and then just continued to build on it.
Hennessey got 19 points out of sophomore Kassidy Amburn. Skye Simunek added nine while Gracie Mills scored seven.
The loss dropped the Lady Eagles to 7-11.
