Padilla claims gold for KHS
Kingfisher takes part in ‘Wrestle Like a Girl’ tournament in Cache
They didn’t wrestle like girls last Friday.
They were girls.
Kingfisher took part of an historic event last week as it fielded an all-female team at the “Wrestle Like a Girl” Cache Invitational.
KHS had two wrestlers in high school brackets and seven more took part in the junior high field.
One of them brought home gold.
Zoey Padilla won the 132-pound weight class in the high school division.
Padilla pinned Journey Garcia of Altus in the gold medal match.
That came after she defeated Sela Jones of Cache with a pin at 3:14 of their match.
Serenity Starr also wrestled for KHS and battled Little Axe’s Angjelica Morales to an 8-5 decision in her second and final match of the 100/107-pound bracket.
Junior high wrestlers were Mylene Jones (110), Autumn Rednose (117), Emily Warren (117), Taygen Otey (126), Cattie Crum (126), Mychaela Haynes (138) and Delissa Evans (145).
Although none medaled for Kingfisher, several were within one match of making the medal round.
Jones scored three points toward the team standings when she pinned Yukon’s Journey Holley at 1:41 of their consolation round match.
Rednose notched six points by pinning Tuttle’s Aspen Cantrell just 53 seconds into their quarterfinal match.
Otey beat Kennedie Nelson of Cache with a pin at 1:10 of their consolation round match and earned three points.
Crum secured the most of any junior high wrestler with eight points.
She won her first two matches by pinning Cache’s Kaitlyn Shelton at 2:45 and then Little Axe’s Brooklyn Clark at 1:10 before dropping the next two. Haynes and Evans both
Haynes and Evans both earned four points.
Haynes earned a forfeit win in her first consolation match before picking up a 4-0 victory over Lani Taylor of Yukon.
Evans won a consolation match against Little Axe’s Rachel Eilerts with a pin 42 seconds into it.
Overall, Kingfisher’s junior high team earned 16 points and placed 13th.
Yukon won the junior high division with 149 points.
Altus was the high school champ with 77 points, edging Yukon by a point.
KHS was 14th with its nine points.
