Muñoz delivers shutout for Jackets
Diego Muñoz provided a shutout in goal to bring the Kingfisher High School boys a second straight win.
Muñoz had 10 saves last Thursday as the Jackets earned a 1-0 victory at Harding Charter in Oklahoma City.
“He played an amazing game,” said head coach Isaac Waltman as the Jackets improved to 3-3 on their season.
Among those saves was a penalty kick in the first half.
That helped keep the game scoreless.
The Jackets broke through offensively nine minutes into the second half when Jake Sisk scored on an assist from Rhett Schlegel.
Muñoz took care of the rest.
On top of his penalty kick save, Muñoz denied Harding on four different one-on-one opportunities.
“He was a huge difference maker for us,” Waltman said. “And he’s having a great season so far.”
Muñoz has recorded 64 total saves on the year, including 21 in one-on-one situations and two penalty kicks.
The Jackets host Heritage Hall next Tuesday in their first district game of the season.
The Chargers are currently 4-1 with a 10-0 district win over Alva under their belts. They played Cordell Tuesday after press time.
Lady Jacket comeback bid falls short
A tale of two (windy) halves saw the KHS girls drop a 3-2 decision to Harding Charter.
The Lady Jackets erased a 2-0 deficit and thought they’d tied it up again in the closing moments, but a Mya Dewberry goal was called off.
“The referee had a better angle, but from my angle, the keeper didn’t gain full control of the ball when Mya kicked it in,” coach Aniessa Edsall said.
Still, said the coach, she was proud of the effort on a tough night.
On top of rain and mist, winds blew 25 to 30 miles per hour.
That wind was against KHS in the first half when Harding Charter built a 2-0 lead.
KHS had the wind in the second and took advantage.
Kylee Rojas gave the Lady Jackets their first goal when she curved in a corner kick.
Another Rojas corner led to Peyton Walker tying up the game later in the half.
Harding Charter was able to score in the game’s last 10 minutes to take the lead.
“We had several people step up and play new positions they hadn’t played before,” Edsall said. “I’m proud of them for being willing to do what’s best for the team.”
Yamile Saucedo had several saves in goal and “did an excellent job stepping in that position,” Edsall said.
The coach said KHS is battling through a number of injuries. Some are minor, yet one is severe.
It was confirmed senior Maleonia Vogt tore her ACL against Newcastle.
“It’s definitely not ideal, but one thing we keep telling the team is how they respond is what’s important… in any circumstance,” Edsall said.
KHS dropped to 2-5 with the loss.
The Lady Jackets begin their district schedule Thursday at Newkirk.
