Minco shuts down Cashion to stay unbeaten
Growing pains continued for the Cashion football season in the first week of district play.
Minco remained undefeated as it handed the Wildcats a 45-0 defeat at home.
Reed McMurtrey didn’t connect on many passes, but they were big ones.
The senior Bulldog quarterback threw for three touchdown passes in the first half to help stake a 38-0 lead.
McMurtrey started things off with his legs as he took a keeper 25 yards for a score.
He then connected on scoring plays with Jake Carruth for 16 yards, Ben Birchfield for 22 and Jace Bratcher for 5 yards.
Clutching the big lead, the Bulldogs put an exclamation point on the road win when Birchfield returned the second-half kickoff 65 yards for a TD.
While Minco ran for 157 yards, Cashion struggled to find any momentum on the ground.
The Wildcats managed only 41 yards on their 24 carries.
Timmy Jones led the way with 25 yards on nine attempts.
Ethan Waswo was 16 of 39 passing for 101 yards and an interception.
Drew Westerhoff caught five of those passes, but they covered only 23 yards.
Maxx Higdon had three catches for 30 yards and Greyson Davis four for 25.
Austin Compton led Cashion’s defense with seven tackles while Kaleb Duran added five.
The loss was Cashion’s second straight as the Wildcats dropped to 1-4.
They’re off this week and return to the field Oct. 6 at Watonga, which is currently 0-5 and travels to Minco this week.
