Hennessey’s Kadee Meeker celebrated her 18th birthday in a big way Saturday.

The senior made six straight 3-pointers - all in the first quarter to help lock up a Class 2A district championship in 64-43 victory over visiting Meeker.

Meeker - the birthday girl - enthralled the Eagle Event Center crowd with her shooting display which helped Hennessey get out to a 24-8 lead in that first quarter.

She had all 22 of her points by halftime as the Lady Eagles pushed their advantage to 37-17.

The lead grew to 33 points in the third quarter as Hennessey made its way into this week’s regional winner’s bracket.

“It was a really cool night for her,” coach Brian Richardson said of Meeker. “And she did it on a slightly sprained ankle.

“I’m super proud of her.” Though Meeker’s scoring slowed in the second half, her teammates’ didn’t.

Emma Copeland scored 10 points in the third quarter and 12 of her 19 in the second half.

Amiliey Tuell added eight points for the Lady Eagles, who were able to put an end to a six-game losing streak.

They go into the regional with a 10-14 mark.

They’ll host No. 17 Pawnee at 6 p.m. Thursday in a regional semifi nal.

Sims paces easy Eagle victory

Hennessey’s quest to get back to the state tournament had a dominant start.

Four Eagles scored in double figures Saturday as they dispatched of visiting Meeker 81-44 in a Class 2A district championship.

The good news in addition to staying in the winner’s bracket is Hennessey will be the host site of this week’s regional tournament.

The fourth-ranked Eagles host Morrison at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in a regional semifinal.

Meeker didn’t have a player reach double figures in scoring.

Hennessey had two of them get there by halftime.

In fact, James Sims did so before the end of the first quarter.

The senior drained a trio of 3-pointers and had single-handedly outscored Meeker 11-10.

He was joined by Camdyn Richardson in scoring eight apiece in the second quarter while Hennessey’s defense put the clamps on the Bulldogs, outscoring them 27-5.

Sims had 19 by half and Richardson had scored 10.

Sims ended his night with 23.

Richardson scored 12, Hunter Weber added 11 and Garret Vinson 10.

The Eagles made nine 3-pointers in the game. Weber and Sims combined for six of them.

Hennessey goes into the regional with a 21-3 record.
