Longhorns muzzle ‘Dogs for big win; girls rally falls short
The transitive property doesn’t always work in sports.
Dover lost its season opener to Lomega by six points.
A few days later, Drummond beat Lomega by five points.
Logic would tell you when Drummond visited Dover last Friday night, the Bulldogs took home a double-digit win.
So, logically, Dover hammered Drummond 53-25.
“We did a lot of things better, including knocking down some shots,” said coach Jared Reese. “And we followed our defensive game plan really well. I knew we were better than what we showed at Lomega and against Drummond we saw some of that.”
Against Lomega, Colten Dillingham torched the nets for 33 points.
Through three quarters against Dover, he had all but two of Drummond’s points. Unfortunately for the Bulldogs, who have reached the Class A state tournament the last two seasons, they had just 15 points.
Dover led by 12 at halftime, then put the game away in the third quarter.
Casen Buck made backto- back 3-pointers as the Longhorns extended their lead to 31-7.
The junior guard made three treys and scored 11 points in that decisive quarter.
He finished the night with 26.
Senior Jonah Pendergraft also provided scoring punch early and late.
He scored six of Dover’s eight points in the first quarter. He added six more in the fourth and finished his night with 14.
Dillingham got help in the fourth quarter as his teammates scored seven of the team’s 10 points, but Dover continued to pull away.
The senior guard scored 15 on the night.
Drummond girls survive late rally by Boeckman, Dover
A furious Dover rally fell just short Friday night.
Kynli Boeckman caught fire in the final 3 minutes, but it wasn’t quite enough as Drummond escaped Dover with a 37-36 victory.
Boeckman scored nine points in the final 3:05, including a bucket in the paint with 3 seconds remaining.
However, that only pulled the Lady Longhorns within a point and Drummond let the clock run out on Dover’s comeback.
The Lady Longhorns were in dire straits when Rylee Buck fouled out with 3:05 to play. She joined fellow starter Ashley Gamez, who earlier fouled out, on the Dover bench.
Drummond got a free throw and a putback on the ensuing play to go up 34-24.
That’s when Boeckman started to take over.
She immediately answered with a driving bucket, then buried a 3-pointer with 2:16 left as Drummond’s lead was cut in half.
The teams then combined to miss 10 straight free throws, six of them by Drummond.
Dover finally was able to take advantage when Madison Goodwin scored a conventional three-point play with 46 seconds left to make it a two-point game.
Drummond finally broke its free throw drought, but only made one, pushing the advantage back to three points.
Boeckman quickly answered again as she drove the left side and laid it off the glass to pull Dover within 35-34. Drummond immediately gave it back as the Lady Bulldogs turned it over on the inbounds play.
The Lady Longhorns didn’t capitalize this time as Joi Caldwell missed a shot underneath. Drummond rebounded, made one of two free throws and then added another foul shot after Dover turned it over.
That last free throw pushed Drummond to a 3734 lead with 16 seconds to play. After a timeout, Dover was unable to get off a threepoint shot.
Drummond won despite going 5 of 13 from the free throw line in the fourth.
The Lady Bulldogs were led by Kendra Dillingham’s 10 points.
Boeckman had nine of her team-high 13 points in the fourth quarter.
The Lady Longhorns had just 18 points going into the final frame before doubling their total.
Gamez scored nine before fouling out.
The loss dropped Dover to 0-2.
