Lomega shrugs off slow start to bench Drummond upset hopes
Drummond’s upset bid looked solid midway through the first quarter.
It was over by the end of the quarter.
Lomega shrugged off a slow start Tuesday to hand the visiting Lady Bulldogs an 80-30 defeat to improve to 2-0.
Drummond got a 3-pointer from Peyton Curry at about the midpoint of the first frame to stake a 7-2 lead.
“We were pretty sloppy early, not making any shots and didn’t take care of the ball very well,” said coach Kevin Lewallen.
Three players off the bench helped spark the turnaround.
Reagan Snowden, Paige Wheeler and Bree Yost each scored buckets in the latter part of the quarter to kickstart a 14-2 Lomega run to end the quarter.
It continued the rest of the game as Lomega scored at least 19 points in the final three frames.
And, as it turned out, the bench continued to play the big role.
That trio led the team in scoring.
Snowden scored 18 points, including nine in the third as Lomega extended its lead from 19 points to 24.
Yost made four 3-pointers and scored 14 points.
Wheeler had a bucket in every quarter and scored 12.
“They give us a different look when they’re on the floor,” Lewallen said. “They’re three of the best athletes we have so teams have to be ready when they come in the game.”
Aliana Lawson added 10 points for Lomega, which outscored Drummond 26-0 in the fourth quarter.
