Lady Longhorns ‘Harviston’ another title
Karlee hits game winner as Dover edges Pioneer for Cimarron title
Dover went more than 13 years between tournament championships.
This time the Lady Longhorns only had to wait one trip around the sun.
Karlee Harviston scored the game winner with just one second left Saturday as Dover edged Pioneer-Pleasant Vale 35-33 in the girls title game of the Cimarron Winter Classic.
It was a repeat title for the Lady Longhorns who beat the host team for the 2021 crown. Prior to that, Dover hadn’t won an invitational tournament since 2008.
Winning this one was no easy task.
Harviston’s bucket was Dover’s first lead since the first quarter.
Pioneer led by six at halftime and carried a two-point advantage into the fourth.
Dover managed to tie the game and had possession with time running out.
“I called a timeout with 10 seconds left and set up a play,” said coach Matt Peck.
It was “4 low” with Katelyn Harviston running the point.
Karlee set a screen for her sister, then caught a pass as she rolled off it.
“She took it to the rim, made it and even got fouled,” Peck said.
Harviston missed her free throw, but the Lady Mustangs had no time to get off a decent look on the opposite end.
After giving up 31 points through three quarters, Dover only gave up a pair of free throws in the fourth.
It outscored Pioneer 1810 over the final two frames.
Karlee Harviston led the way with 17.
Katelyn Harviston scored 12. Dover also got four points from Rylee Buck.
Dover has now won seven straight and is 9-2 with one game left (at Garber on Tuesday after press time) before the holiday break.
Part of that streak was Friday’s 35-19 win over Burlington in the semifinals.
Karlee Harviston scored 19 and Katelyn Harviston 11 in that victory.
Buck led the way with 20 points in the 66-28 victory against Sharon-Mutual/ Taloga in the quarterfinals. Katelyn (18 points) and Karlee (16 points) Harviston also had big offensive outputs.
Longhorns beat M-O for 3rd place
The Dover boys snagged two wins and the thirdplace trophy out of the Cimarron Winter Classic over the weekend.
The Longhorns bested Mulhall-Orlando 61-30 Saturday in the third-place game.
The win was a bounce back after dropping a 60-36 decision to Coyle in Friday’s semifinal round.
The Bluejackets held Dover to just 10 firsthalf points in building a 15-point lead, then continued to build on it.
Dover returned the favor against M-O as it led by 15 at the break.
Kolten Shaw scored 10 points and Carlos Flores nailed two treys during an 18-point second quarter for the Longhorns.
The squad hit four more treys in the third, two by Nathan Cohee.
Shaw ended his night with 16 points, all in the first half.
Flores scored 15 while Ashton Caldwell and Damion Turner added seven apiece.
Shaw scored 15 in the loss to Coyle.
Dover opened the tournament with a 45-40 win over Sharon-Mutual/Taloga in overtime. It was Dover’s third overtime game of the season.
After surrendering a double-digit lead in the fourth, Dover outscored Sharon-Mutual 6-1 in the overtime.
Shaw scored 14 and Flores 13 in the win.
Dover ended the tournament with a 5-6 overall record.
