Lady Longhorn upset bid falls short at Skeltur

Even in defeat, the Dover girls basketball team is showing improvement.

The Lady Longhorns on Saturday fell just shy of winning the Skeltur Conference Tournament.

Undefeated Garber held off Dover’s rally for a 4139 win in the title game at Stride Center in Enid.

The loss dropped Dover to 16-5 on the season.

One of the previous four losses was to the Lady Wolverines, who are ranked fifth in Class A. When the teams met Dec. 13 in Garber, it was a 17-point win for the home team.

This game was close from the start.

Karlee Harviston and Leila Washington were in a shootout in the first quarter.

Harviston scored 11 for Dover and Washington nine for Garber as the teams were tied 16-16.

Unfortunately, Washington went down with an injury and didn’t return.

Garber still led 24-23 at halftime, then Alyssa Johnson picked up the scoring slack in the third.

The Garber starter made three of her five 3-pointers to help her team to a 37-29 lead.

But the Lady Longhorns mounted a comeback.

Rylee Buck and Katelyn Harviston each made 3-pointers in the last stanza as Dover closed the gap.

Katelyn then knocked down two free throws with 1:19 left to make it a twopoint game.

Garber worked the clock down to 20 seconds before calling a timeout, but the Lady Wolverines instantly turned it over on the inbounds play after the break.

Dover never got the chance to tie or take the lead as the Lady Longhorns turned it right back over.

Eventually, Garber’s Kamilah Gay was sent to the line with 6.8 seconds left.

She missed the front end of a one-and-one, but Olivia Schmidt grabbed the offensive rebound and the Lady Wolverines ran out the clock.

Johnson led Garber with 17 points.

Karlee Harviston scored 21 for Dover before fouling out in the waning moments.

Katelyn Harviston scored 13.

Drummond was responsible for one of Dover’s other losses, but the Lady Longhorns avenged that in Friday’s semifinal.

They held the Lady Bulldogs to three second-half points to win 30-18.

Karlee Harviston scored 16 to lead the Lady Longhorns while Ashley Gamez had three.

The two combined for all six of Dover’s fourth-quarter points as they built on their lead.

Longhorns nipped by Mustangs for 5th

The Dover boys took sixth in the tournament after losing 48-45 to Pioneer- Pleasant Vale in the consolation championship game.

The Longhorns stayed in it with the long ball as they knocked down 12 3-pointers.

Three of those were by Damion Turner in the fourth quarter, but Dover couldn’t quite close the gap.

Turner hit five total and scored 17 points.

Pedro Valles scored all nine of his points on three 3-pointers.

Carlos Flores added 10 for the Longhorns.

Dover avenged an earlier loss when it beat Waukomis 51-38 in Friday’s consolation semifinal.

The Chiefs knocked off Dover in overtime in late November.

Orlando Lozano scored 17 in the win while Nathan Cohee added 11.

Dover ended the week with a 7-13 record.
