Lady Jackets knock off Weatherford
Garramone bat leads KHS to biggest win of season over defending district champs
Morgan Dutton has the first signature win of her career.
Kingfisher continued its impressive turnaround after a lackluster season opener by shocking Weatherford 4-2 last Tuesday.
The Lady Jackets’ home victory evened their District 4A-1 record at 1-1 while Weatherford was handed its first loss of the season.
It was the visitors’ first district loss since 2022 as the Lady Eagles were 12-0 in those games a year ago en route to a trip to the Class 4A state tournament.
Kingfisher’s previous district loss was a 15-2 run-rule to Bethany a week prior.
Since that loss, Kingfisher went 4-0 in winning a tournament in Pauls Valley.
Meanwhile, Weatherford blanked Bethany 10-0 in a tournament (non-district) showdown.
But someone forgot to tell the Lady Jackets about the transitive property.
Kingfisher never trailed thanks in large part to the bat of Liliana Garramone.
The sophomore’s first-inning triple scored Adlee Friesen, who led off with a walk.
Garramone then scored on a passed ball for an early 2-0 lead.
Kinlee East did her part to make the lead stick.
The sophomore right-hander kept Weatherford mostly off balance and her defense backed her up. The Lady Jackets had one error in the first inning, but none the rest of the game. The pitching and defense four times had to work through the top of the Weatherford order, which includes two- hole hitter Marley Teasley, a Grand Canyon University commit, and the highly-touted Harlie Chism. The latter is the leadoff hitter and shortstop for the Lady Eagles. She is a Florida State University commit who was a member of the Team USA U-18 team over the summer. In her second atbat, Chism collected a one-out single with a runner on base. Teasley followed her up with a single to score a run, cutting Kingfisher’s lead in half.
Weatherford managed to load the bases on a fielder’s choice with the next batter, but East got out of the jam with a strikeout and a groundout to avoid further damage.
The Lady Jackets got that run back in the bottom of the third when Kendall Farrar led off with a single, then scored on Garramone’s double to the gap.
Farrar came up big again in the fourth.
Addison Johnson blooped a single to lead off the inning, then moved to third base on consecutive sacrifice bunts by Shelby Davis and Jancee Matthews.
Farrar then legged out a ground ball to Chism, just beating her throw to first, which allowed Johnson to score and make it 4-1 in favor of KHS.
Kaitlyn Bryant’s two-out single in the fifth scored Chism, who had reached on a fielder’s choice.
East again limited the Lady Eagles as Friesen snagged a line drive at first to end the frame.
Weatherford had one last gasp with the top of its lineup in the seventh.
Chism’s ground ball to shortstop led off the inning, but she was unable to reach as Lily Voth’s throw just beat her foot to the bag.
After East hit Teasley with a pitch, she got Bryant to fly out to Farrar in right field and then fielded a ground ball by Joss Schulz up the middle.
After knocking down the hit, East grabbed it and threw her out at first to end the game.
East gave up five hits and two earned runs in her seven innings.
She struck out one batter and walked one.
Garramone went 3 for 3 with two doubles and a triple.
She drove in two runs and scored one for the Lady Jackets.
Farrar was 2 for 2 with an RBI and a run scored while Johnson had Kingfisher’s other hit off Teasley.
In taking the loss, Teasley went six innings, struck out nine and walked one.
The win was Kingfisher’s fifth straight as it improved to 5-1 overall and 1-1 in the district.
Weatherford dropped to 5-1 and 0-1.
